Agricultural Information System East Africa

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, BMGF focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.

AIS-EA:   The Agricultural Information System (East Africa) is the delivery of a first step in a vision to provide critical agri-business information.  This specific project, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides real-time agriculturally interpretable weather data to allow for better crop and crop activity planning.  Included in the project’s data scope will be 10 years of historical daily data to better understand inter-annual variation and thus risk.  The project also includes a daily updated 10-day weather forecast.  These forecast data will be processed through various pest models to inform users of ‘conditions conducive’ for various crop pests.

Sustainable food production is a combination of biology and economics.  Location intelligent information systems contribute to improved food security and economic growth across the region and within agricultural production systems.
